Volunteer Board Member Job Posting

SPCW is one of the oldest social justice organizations in Canada.  Born out of the same turbulent times that led to the General Strike of 1919, SPCW focuses on change rather than charity to achieve our vision of a sustainable community that is equitable, just and caring.  

• We are a membership-based organization, working to identify gaps, build capacity and support community-led initiatives.  
• We work primarily on issues related to poverty as it is the major barrier to full social inclusion.  We identify gaps in services and resources and work to fill them through coalitions and partnerships.  
• We also research and identify barriers created by public policy at all levels of government and advocate for progressive changes.

SPCW also hosts Immigration Partnership Winnipeg (IPW).  IPW is a multi-sectoral partnership that provides a collaborative framework to facilitate the development and implementation of sustainable local solutions for the successful integration of newcomers, refugee and immigrants, to Winnipeg. IPW’s overall goal is to support the full economic and social inclusion of newcomers. We coordinate community-level planning, facilitate communication amongst stakeholders and identify needs or gaps through consultation with community, government and newcomers themselves.

Duties:

• Ensure that the activities and initiatives adhere to SPCW’s charitable purposes and our mission, vision and guiding principles
• Regular attendance at board meetings, typically 9 in a year.  Having to miss occasionally is, of course, sometimes necessary but a commitment to attend the majority would be essential in order to share your expertise on the various SPCW/IPW initiatives
• As able, participate in board committees (executive, finance, fundraising/membership engagement, nominating and other ad-hoc committees deemed necessary by the board
• Support staff led initiatives through your expertise, connections and volunteering when able
• Participate in the Annual General Meeting, not mandatory
• Participate in strategic planning when necessary
• Provide overall fiscal oversight and ensure that SPCW adheres to the by-laws as approved by the membership

 Qualifications:

• Keen interest in social justice and solutions to poverty related matters. 
• Active or interested in becoming active in the not-for-profit sector.
• Social media communication experience would be an asset.
• Both a wide breadth of knowledge and a particular expertise in a related area to SPCW/IPW work would be an asset
