Follow-up question to the mayoral candidates:

What will you do as mayor to ensure that workers with the City of Winnipeg are ensured a safe and respectful working environment, free of any type of harassment?

Glen Murray:

The City of Winnipeg is a respectful workplace and has a code of conduct policy in place. As stated in the Respectful Workplace Statement of Commitment, the City of Winnipeg “recognizes its responsibility to build and maintain a respectful workplace where all employees enjoy an environment free of behaviours such as unlawful discrimination, harassment, rumours that damage a person’s reputation, disruptive workplace conflict, and disrespectful behaviour in the workplace.” As Mayor, I will demonstrate this commitment in my leadership and will ensure that the workplace is one that is safe for all. I will ensure that our human resources department has the proper systems in place to ensure that City of Winnipeg employees enjoy a safe and respectful working environment free of any type of harassment.

Scott Gillingham:

Every city employee deserves to work in a safe and respectful environment, and under my leadership, harassment of any kind will not be tolerated. It’s critical for the mayor to lead by example in addressing this issue. The city recently updated its respectful workplace policy, and I’ve also committed to meeting regularly with the various unions that represent civic employees to ensure concerns like this are addressed.

Rana Bokhari:

“Earlier in the campaign, I pledged to invest $1 million yearly into the city’s civil service to increase the amount of tools and leadership training available for them. I believe the City of Winnipeg already has policies and procedures in place to report harassment of any kind, but we all know sometimes these are not taken seriously. As a woman and a Muslim, I’ve been at the forefront of harassment and I know what it’s like to have your concerns dismissed. I will do everything in my power to foster a welcoming, harassment-free environment for all city workers.”
